Tarot Tuesday ~ The Hierophant

Every Tuesday, I will be highlighting a different Tarot card from the Rider Waite tarot deck!  This week's card is.....

The Hierophant is referred to as The Pope in some decks.  He is shown with his right hand raised with two fingers pointed up (to the heavens) and two pointed down (to the earth) in what is known as the blessing or benediction.  He serves as the bridge between God and humanity.  His throne sits between two pillars - law and liberty (obedience and disobedience).  You'll notice the symbolism of the number three throughout - three crosses on his robe, three thronged staff in his left hand, wearing the triple crown.  The keys to Heaven lay at his feet.

Fun Fact:  In the Lord of the Rings Tarot deck, Gandalf the White is the Hierophant.

Upright Position:  religion, conformity, belief, tradition

Reversed Position:  restriction, challenging one's beliefs, non-conformity
